Heilige Mattheus

Eibergen, NL

Roman Catholic parish church of St. Matthew in Eibergen. The parish of Eibergen is old. Until the Reformation, it used the old, late Gothic Matthew Church, the current Dutch Reformed Church. At the end of the eighteenth century, the Catholics of Eibergen attended church in a barn church that was served by Franciscan fathers from Zwillbrock in what was then Prussia. In 1824, a so-called water board church was built. After the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853, the water board church was replaced by a neo-Gothic church by architect Tepe. That happened in 1876.

The mainly Neo-Gothic CHURCH of the parish of Saint Matthias, founded in 1730, was built in 1730-1732 as a barn church, next to the later disappeared medieval chapel and was rebuilt in 1834-1835 in the Water Board style after a restoration in 1800. In 1890 a new choir with two transepts was built, after which the tower was raised in 1905 and clad with machine bricks. In 1929 a large-scale extension took place according to plans by HC van de Leur, with a second transept, boys' and girls' chapels and sacristy. All renovations from 1890 onwards took place in Neo-Gothic style, whereby the roof construction of the barn church from 1730-1732 was preserved. A date stone in the south aisle. This church is listed as a National Monument of the Netherlands.

Roman Catholic church, dedicated to Saint Mauritius; originally Romanesque nave with late Gothic vaults, aisles and tower 1768; choir 1926. Romanesque baptismal font. In the churchyard nine grave crosses, 1611-1777. Gravestone of Pastor Paschalis Habets, circa 1745 in front of the entrance to the parsonage garden.

St. Michael's Church. Single-nave church, built in 1659-1668 with a three-sided closed choir, roof turret and a strikingly richly decorated facade with volutes and pediment. The design is possibly by Father Hieronymus Mauritius from Brussels. Initially used as a monastery church by the Dominican Fathers. In the late 17th century, the sacristy was built against the choir closure with the library above it.

Modern small church hall. Replaced the monumental church that was demolished in 2007. which had become too large. On Sunday 29 November 2009, Bishop Van den Hende consecrated the new St. Michael's Church on the Hooghout in Breda. The consecration of the church is the highlight of a whole week of activities in and around the church. From the time of the consecration of the church, the parish of Breda-Oost will call itself the Michael's Parish. The parish of Breda-Oost decided to build a new church in 2001. The result of a careful process is a new, modern Catholic church, which aims to have a social function in the neighbourhood and is built in a complex with homes and the neighbourhood library.

St. Michael, consecrated 1879, architect WVA Tepe. Important church in the oeuvre of this architect. Neo-Gothic cruciform basilica with high west tower, decorated with three niches in three floors each. Balustrades and pinnacles of brick, richly detailed gables on the transept with niches and phials. Octagonal sacristy with floor and tent roof, on which wooden tower on the south side of the choir. Round pillars with colonnettes and moulded capitals. Almost completely preserved Bernulphusgilde inventory. Single manual organ, made in 1758 by JHH Bätz for the Herv. Church in Oosterhout. After residing in two churches in Utrecht, the organ was placed in Schalkwijk in 1987. Mechanical tower clock, Gebr. van Bergen in Midwolda, 1879 (1839?), equipped with electric winding.
