Holy Cross

Holy Cross

Crediton, GB

The church in Crediton has a history as long as that of any church in Devon. It can be traced in written records back to the early 10th century, and if an 11th century copy of a charter of 739AD is authentic, to almost two centuries earlier. In 739AD Aethelheard, king of the West Saxons, granted land for a monastery. In the early 900's a cathedral was built, almost certainly of wood.

Holy Cross Exaltation Church

Holy Cross Exaltation Church

Wenduine, BE

A chapel in Wenduine was first mentioned in 1135. This became the parish church around 1185. Originals parts of the old church can still be found in the south choir and the substructure of the tower. The church underwent its first renovation in the first half of the 13th century. The building was expanded with side aisles and side choirs around 1290. The tower, which also served as a beacon for shipping, was raised between 1546 and 1547. The church was destroyed by the Iconoclasm in 1566. The church was used by the army as a horse shed from 1607. The restorations of the church took place two years later. The church was reduced in size because the number of parishioners had greatly decreased. After Wenduine had developed into a seaside resort, around 1900, the number of churchgoers increased again. A new western part of the church was built in 1906.

Holy Dormition Cathedral

Holy Dormition Cathedral

Volodymyr-Volynsky, UA

The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God is a 12th-century Orthodox cathedral. Only the oldest lower parts of the temple come from the Old Russian period, and most of the present body of the building was created in 1900 as a reconstruction of the original appearance of the object. The first Orthodox church in this place was built by order of Prince Mstislav II of Kyiv in 1156-1160. In 1885, after the Polotsk Synod (incorporation of the Greek-Catholic Church into the Orthodox Church), work began on restoring the building. A special commission cleaned the territory of the ruined cathedral, which was then rebuilt according to the design of G. Kotov in the neo-Byzantine style.
