The Monastery of St. Leontius is a sacred complex located on an archaeological site with remains dating back to the 4th century. The site contains three churches, architectural remains, annex buildings and a monastic complex, two baths and a multi-storey Christian necropolis. The frescoes of the interior were painted in three periods, in the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries.

The monastery of St. Mary is a 12th-century Benedictine monastery located on an islet of the Great Lake of Mljet. The Romanesque monastery has been rebuilt several times. The current building is a two-storey Renaissance building bounded on both sides by a courtyard, and the main driveway towards the courtyard has an arched corridor. The complex, with a tower at the southeast corner, forms a defensive unit.

The present building of the Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas dates from the early 16th century and probably owes its name to an ascetic who lived on the rock in the 14th century. Fully adapted to the rock on which it was built, the monastery is suspended on several floors. The monastery was famous for having been painted by the Cretan painter Theophanes the Cretan in 1527 and houses one of the most important collections of post-Byzantine painting.

The Monastery of St. Paul was founded in the 13th century but was built in several phases, the last of which was completed in 1497 with the construction of the chapel and library. After the Reformation, the monastery came into the possession of the city, which operated a hospital and a benefactor's house there. The church served as a Protestant parish church from 1560, and the monastery and church burned down during the Second World War. Since 2008, St. Paul's Monastery has been open to the public again. It houses the State Archaeological Museum. The monastery church serves as a venue for events.

The Monastery of St. Stephen is a women's monastery founded in the 14th century on a hermetic site dating from the 12th century. The monastery seems to have been extensively renovated in the 16th century, but its present form derives mainly from buildings constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since 1961, the monastery has housed a women's brotherhood. The monastery is one of the six monasteries that continue to be active in the Meteora, which have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1988.

The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a complex that includes a royal palace and basilica, a pantheon, a library, a school and a monastery. The complex was designed between 1563 and 1584 by King Philip II and his architects. The austere 33,327 m2 Renaissance building has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.

Built by the Order of Friars Minor between the 17th and 18th centuries. With the extinction of the male religious orders (1834), the complex passed to the civil sphere, housing the municipality's public offices, namely services linked to municipal administration, finance and public education, through the installation of a school in the property.

The Monastery of the Holy Archangels in Prizren was a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery, founded by Serbian Emperor Stefan Dušan (1308 – 1355). It was built from 1343 to 1352 and inaugurated the ecclesiastical architectural style of the Morava school.

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity, whose construction began in the 14th-15th century, is one of the six active monasteries of the Meteors. According to local tradition, the monastery was built by the monk Domitian in 1438, but there are references to the monastery from 1362. The monastery and the chapel of St John the Baptist, carved into the rock, contain frescoes from the 17th century.
