The present building was commissioned by Duke Francesco II Sforza around 1530. Construction began in 1532 under the direction of Antonio da Lonate. It was not completed until 1612. The building was consecrated on 24th April 1612.

The Vigo Co-Cathedral, or Collegiate Church of Santa María, dates from the early 19th century. A Gothic-style building was on its site from the end of the 14th century, but in 1585 the church was ransacked and damaged by the troops of the pirate Francis Drake. Finally, in 1809, a powder keg in Castro's castle exploded and critically damaged the church. The construction of the current building is the work of the academician Melchor de Prado y Mariño, and is mainly neoclassical in style, although the towers are Baroque.
