Priory Notre-Dame of Charity-sur-Loire is a Benedictine priory funded in 1059 as “daughter-house” of the Cluny abbey, in Burgundy. Closed in 1791, the priory was listed as a historical monument in 1840 and inscribed in 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Route.

The first documentary records of the church date back to 1055. The complex consists of a Romanesque church (although with later modifications) with three naves and three apses, which open into a transept. It also conserves the crypt where the holy relics were kept.

This church is dedicated to the two Holy Marys: Mary of Cleophas (mother of the Apostle St. James the Less) and Mary Salome (mother of the Apostles Sts. James and John), mentioned in the Gospels. Fate would have brought the two Holy Marys to the Camargue coast, where they settled. At their death they were buried in this place where a church was built and later a monastery.

The priory of Val Duchesse was a convent of Dominican nuns from the 13th century. It was founded in 1262 by the Duchess Adelaide of Burgundy with the religious community of Val Duchesse. Closed by the revolutionary power in 1796, what remained of it passed into private hands in the 19th century before becoming the property of the Belgian State in 1930. Today, the priory and its grounds are often used for important national or international meetings and colloquia.
