Vyshhorodok, UA
The exact period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown. According to the dates on preserved gravestones, it can be assumed that the cemetery already existed in the first part of the 18th century. n March 16, 1942, the Jews of Vyshhorodok were isolated in the Vyshnivets ghetto. On August 11, 1942, all the prisoners were executed during the ghetto liquidation.

The exact period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown. According to the US Commission expedition in the 2000s, the earliest preserved gravestone relates to 1583. It can be assumed that the cemetery already operated in the late 16th century. First, it appears on Russian maps of 1891. In March 1942, 3,500 Jews were forced to live in a ghetto. The Jews from the neighbouring villages were placed into it. On August 11, 1942, about 2,500 Jews were executed when the ghetto was liquidated.

Vytautas the Great Church is the oldest church in Kaunas, built around 1400, and the only Gothic church in Lithuania with a cross-shaped plan. From the 17th to the 19th century, the church was damaged and misused by passing foreign troops, and the church ceased to be used for religious purposes in 1899. The building was reconsecrated in 1920 and repaired throughout the 20th century.

Presumably, the Jewish Cemetery in Vyzhnytsya was established in the 19th century. According to epigraphic data, it already existed in the 1860s. It was marked on a map of the 1880s. The cemetery is still operating.

Værnes church is a Romanesque stone church dating from the 12th century. The tower was added at the beginning of the 13th century. At the same time, a rib vault was made at the base of the tower, which was previously used as a baptistery. The sacristy was built in the 15th century, and the choir arch was enlarged in the 17th century. 100 metres to the north of the church there is an excavated lime kiln dating from the 13th century. The church in Værnes was restored under the direction of Erling Gjone and was completed in 1966.

The new church in Værøy is a long stone church built in 1939 and restored in 1984. The architect of the church was Harald Sund. When the church was built, the municipality of Værøy could not afford to give it an altarpiece. In 1999 the church finally received an altarpiece, made by Karl Erik Harr.
