The church of Opwierde probably dates to the 13th century. It is located on a mound, almost enclosed by Appingedam. It is a remarkable building, with facades that are divided into two zones and niches decorated with wickerwork.

With the reclamation of the peat colonies around 1600, the village of Oude Pekela was founded. Not much later, between 1683 and 1685, they built a simple hall church, financed by the city of Groningen, which also became the owner of the church.

The church of Saaxumhuizen has sadly lost its medieval character through various renovations and repairs. The church nowadays has mainly 19th century features. The current tower has replaced a free-standing, low, obtuse tower.

The first church of Solwerd was demolished in 1536 after a violent fire and it is unknown exactly how long it was left standing in ruins before being demolished.

This 13th century ocher-colored church stands on the edge of a mound. The church is dedicated to St. Georgios or St. Joris.

This late-Roman church built on a mound was once a much larger cross-church from the twelfth century. The current building consists of the choir tramp and the former crossing. The presence of the previous, larger church is still noticeable in parts of the building.

This church has played an important role in the community: its decorations commemorate many important local residents, and it has also been used as a schoolhouse for local children.

The church of Ulrum is inextricably linked to Ds. Hendrik de Cock: in 1834 the Secession started from this church. The hall church was built in the second quarter of the 13th century and was restored in the years 1916/1917 by the former state master C.H. Peters.
